Major fire at takeaway restaurant shows need for the right insurance

April 19th, 2012 by Andrew B No comments »

Restaurant Fire InsuranceCould your business survive in the event of a fire?

A takeaway restaurant in the North of England is likely to be closed for some time after a major blaze.  The McDonalds restaurant in Preston, Lancashire was recently evacuated after a kitchen fire broke out with the clean-up expected to cost thousands of pounds.

If you run a takeaway, cafe or restaurant, protecting yourself against the risk of fire should be a major priority.  Without it, you could face a sizeable bill or even the end of your business.  Keep reading to learn more about this serious restaurant fire and how getting the right cafe, bistro or restaurant insurance can ensure you’re protected.

McDonalds fire tackled by 60 firefighters

A recent fire at McDonalds in Preston shows the importance of getting the right cafe or restaurant insurance.  The Lancashire Evening Post reported that more than 60 firefighters tackled the blaze for over four hours and local businesses were asked to evacuate their premises.  Several streets in the town centre were also closed.

Dick Stott, group manager for Lancashire Fire and Rescue, said: “There is a fairly big clean-up for McDonald’s to pick up.

“What appears to have happened is the range has ignited, which has then gone into the ducting which takes all the fumes out of the building.  The fire has got into the ceiling in various parts of the building.”

While the initial blaze was quickly extinguished, fire crews had to go into ceiling crawl spaces to extinguish individual outbreaks of fire which had broken out.

Nigel Dunnington, who owns the restaurant, said: “Thank God nobody was hurt, the procedures were followed, that’s the most important thing.

“I expect we will be closed for a period. When we get the green light we will go and assess the damage.”

The right restaurant insurance can protect you

A fire in your cafe, wine bar or restaurant can have devastating consequences.  As well as the risk to people on the premises, you could also be facing a large bill for the damage caused by a blaze.  You may also face loss of earnings if your restaurant has to be closed for a period.

That’s why it’s vital you get the right restaurant insurance.  A good policy will make sure your premises and contents are protected against fire.  Including ‘business interruption’ cover will also make sure that you’re financially compensated if you are denied access to your premises after a fire.

How Truck Insurance Quotes Calculate Premiums

April 18th, 2012 by Andrew B No comments »

There are several elements involved in calculating the premiums of your truck insurance so if you are shopping around for truck insurance quotes it is worth understanding the elements of insurance premium calculation, which you can have an effect on and which are just circumstantial and beyond your control.

  • How old is the driver and long have they held a licence for

Clearly this is an element that you simply have no control over.  Insurance companies favour those over 30 but under 65.  New drivers are considered a risk because they have no experience and are more likely to be involved in an accident conversely older drivers are considered to have slower response times and equally more likely to be involved in an accident.  It is a no win situation and unless you are in the favoured group you will just have to put up with a premium increase for this one.  Your licence and training need to be as up to date as possible – adding advanced driver training to a licence is a good way to prove you are a safe and competent driver.

  • Routes v Experience

Driving for a living suggests without doubt you will spend more time on the road than most domestic drivers.  It is likely the time you spend on roads that are seen as higher risk will increase too.  You will potentially be driving at accident black times – early morning, dusk, poor light, fog etc.  These are clearly going to make the premiums higher but on the flip side experience can counteract this.  Having evidence of your time in the trade, the various driving conditions you have experienced can help push the premium back down again.  You do have to have the physical evidence and this can be the tricky part, however one way is…

  • Employment History

If you have been driving for a living for a long time make sure you say so.  Having years under your belt suggests that you are going to have a good working knowledge of roads and routes, of your vehicle etc – all of which, in the eyes of the insurance company will add up to a lower accident risk which will reduce your truck insurance quote a little more.

  • Claim history

It goes without saying really but clearly if you have a long list of claims from the past you are going to be looking at higher premiums – obviously this is less affected if you were not at fault, but if you were at fault – or no liable party was found then you could see your premiums taking a hike.  In this day and age don’t be tempted to try and hide anything though.  Too much cross checking is done and this is the age of big brother.  Keep it real and accept that rules.  Forgetting the odd incident or two because it wasn’t a high value claim is insurance fraud and could negate the policy if it is unearthed whilst you are making a new claim.
